The 1986 Toyota Supra was King of the streets back when I was in grade school. I can still remember those cars today. I remember my sister was dating a guy who owned a 1987 Toyota Supra, and it was a sweet ride. You have to remember that back in the 80’s; muscle cars of the 70’s were still pretty abundant. So, for any foreign car with an engine less than 300 cubic inches that was able to run the streets with the best of them had to be something pretty darn special; and the Toyota Supra’s have always been just that- something special!
Something truly special to behold of course would be the Toyota Supra Twin Turbo, which is easily capable of 500 horsepower which is touching upon super car status at that point. But I guess I would not be too far off to call the Toyota Supra concept a super car; after all their reputation precedes them as well as their popularity. I still see the new Toyota Supra among that of the Lamborghini and Ferrari in poster shops, and what teenager can turn on their computer without a Toyota Supra wallpaper flashing before their feverish road hungry eyes.
To truly appreciate these cars, one has to go back through time and see the transformations that these beauties went through to become what they are today. The 1988 Toyota Supra was the last year of the beginning production Supra’s, before the 3.0 liter began to be replaced by the healthy albeit less powerful 2.0 as the base model engine. The turbo 3.0 was of course still in the line-up in was just higher up on the totem pole than the previous years, but that made them all the more popular over the next several years.
The 1998 Toyota Supra is one of my favorite body styles, and to judge from their popularity on the street racer circuit, I am not the only one who thinks that. At this point, the 2.0 was out of the picture, and once again the 3.0 reined as your main engine choice. But alas, I am sure that this disappointed almost nobody who was pulling out of the Toyota dealer. There is just no finer thought in my mind that cruising the streets in a brand new Toyota Supra for sale. I am talking a 2002 Toyota Supra, or actually why don’t I make it a 2007 Toyota Supra; ah heck, I might as well be greedy and say it has to be the all new concept 2008 Toyota Supra.
Okay, okay; so the 2008 Toyota Supra is but a rumor right now, but a sweet rumor to mine ears none the less. Sticking with the similar body style of the late 90’s but only jazzed up with a modern flare that is sure to please anyone who has been a fan of these cars since their opening debut. The production numbers have already been rumored to feature the convertible model predominantly with an 8-cylinder 450 horsepower engine tucked neatly between its fat tires. And best of all is the thought that this is supposed to be Toyotas affordable line of sport vehicles compared to the likes of the Lexus GT 450.
So if we all start saving our money right now (we will need between $40,000 and $50,000), maybe we all can get a piece of the action… but this is still just a rumor. Maybe if we all pray hard enough it will be out before you can say “Toyota Supra parts!”
